Denali National Park has very few hiking trails but you can hike anywhere in the 6.2 million acre Park. This is sometimes daunting to visitors. There are some very nice trails in the entrance area near the Visitor Center and this map provides a good overview of these trails.
entrance area trail map source: Denali National Park Website
ENTRANCE AREA TRAILS:
For a description of some of the trails indicated on this map near the Visitor Center, follow this link to the Denali National Park Website: Hiking Trails in the Entrance Area
These trails include: Roadside, Rock Creek, Taiga, Mt. Healy Overlook, Meadow View, McKinley Station and Horseshoe Lake. The trailheads for all of these trails start at the Visitor Center. Before you go, stop at the Information Desk, get a map and talk to a Ranger.
Two times a day, there are Ranger-led hikes from the Denali Visitor Center.
TRAILS OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE AREA:
Miles 13-15 – Near the Savage River Check Station – You can drive to mile 15, park your car in designated areas and hike on established trails in this area. There are two hikes in this area. The Savage River Loop Trail is a very easy walk along the River and begins at the Parking area at Mile 15.

The other hike is the Savage Alpine Trail. Park at Mountain Vista, Mile 13, or at Savage River, Mile 15. It is strenuous and long so take weather gear, water and food. It is NOT a loop trail and from either direction, you will have to make your way back to the start point by walking on the Park Road or taking the free Savage River Shuttle. The 2014 Shuttle Schedule will be posted on the Denali National Park Website. No map is available.

At the Eielson Visitor Center at Mile 66, there is an easy trail that loops in front of the Visitor Center and a strenuous Alpine Trailthe goes steeply uphill with gorgeous views and in wildflower season (mid-June – Mid-July), it is spectacular. There is a Ranger Led hike daily at 1PM. You must buy a Shuttle Bus ticket to get there.
At Wonder Lake, Mile 88, there is one trail, the McKinley Bar. It is flat and easy and on clear days, wonderful views of Mt. McKinley (Denali) and the Alaska Range. You must buy a Shuttle Bus ticket to get there.
THE BEST HIKES OF ALL
Denali National Park is unlike other National Parks. You can just get off of a Shuttle Bus deep into wilderness areas and make your way through the tundra to mountain peaks, river bars, glaciers and some of the greatest scenery on the planet. There are no wilderness trails. It is the greatest experience in the world. Stop by the Visitor Center and talk to a Ranger to get recommendations on some of the most scenic areas to hike. The Shuttle drivers are also a wonderful resource.
If you don’t want to go alone, Denali has another best-kept secret: Ranger Led Hikes called Discovery Hikes!! Go to the Visitor Center 2 days ahead of you desired hike date and sign up with a Ranger. Not everyone can go on these hikes because they are in rough terrain, require recent hiking experience and proper gear. It will be a great day in your life because you will go into wilderness areas and discover some of the most beautiful areas of the Park with a Ranger. You will have to buy a shuttle bus ticket for these hikes.
